Spring 2017 Plans

Daffodils are coming up in the yard, so it's time to get organized for spring ultimate. The captains and coaches met last week, and we are all looking forward to spring. The fall was fun and successful on the field, but the captains, Coach John, and I all agree that we'd like to get the younger players more playing time while continuing to improve our competitiveness. The goal is to field and schedule both a competitive team and a developmental team this spring.

Washington Area Frisbee Club, our league, will not have a regularly scheduled youth league this spring as they have in previous springs. Frankly, the WAFC Jr. League always struggled with the region's better youth teams preferring tournaments and many other teams not reliably showing up. To ensure we have regularly scheduled games, our developmental team will compete in the Fairfax Ultimate League. There will be a bit more driving (Alexandria and mostly Reston), but we will have games against other youth clubs every Sunday afternoon from mid-March to mid-May. Fairfax County Schools have the same spring break as MCPS this year so the schedule should work out.

Meanwhile, our competitive team will be trying to find tournaments to compete in. The tournaments aren't yet scheduled yet, but I will let you know as soon as they are. We are actively looking for tournaments that don't involve overnight travel. WAFC will focus on running up to three regional youth tournaments in which we plan to participate. In fact, we and other Montgomery County youth teams may host one of the tournaments. Definitely plan to compete in the Maryland State Championships (there may be a regional version), likely the weekend of May 20-21.  Finally, there will be a few other games when we can find a field and an opponent. Wilson has invited us to their stadium for Monday Night Ultimate on April 24. We also hope to find time to play other stand-alone games. Damascus, Berman, Blair, Rockville, Churchill, and Wootton are all possibilities.

Practices will start with intra-team scrimmages February 25 and March 5. We will start our Tuesday and Thursday, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, practices after Daylight Savings Time returns Tuesday, March 14. Practices will again be at NIH Field.

Expect at least the following costs this spring:
- $50 to Fairfax Ultimate
- $45 for new Jersey (captains are designing)
- $34.50 USA Ultimate Dues (required to play at states)
- Other tournament fees TBD

Here is the whole schedule as we know it so far: Poets & Pitchers calendar. I will send out the spring signup sheet later this week.
