On May 28, Poets & Pitchers came in second at the Maryland State High School Ultimate Tournament at Troy Park in Elkridge. The tournament had been rescheduled from its original May 21 date due to rain, so P&P used a combined A/B team in the tournament.
The team finished with a 4-2 record on the day, with both losses to BCC, the now three-time defending state champs. P&P played three pool play games in the morning, starting with a 9-6 win over local rivals Churchill. In the second game, against BCC, P&P rested most of the A-team players in order to save energy for later in the day, losing 11-7. P&P then defeated Mount Hebron 11-3 to finish off the group stage.

The afternoon included three grueling knockout games in the scorching heat, as the A-team players were used almost exclusively in order to keep the tournament run alive. They started with a narrow 9-7 win over a highly athletic Catonsville team in the quarterfinals, and then faced a combined team made up of several different Howard County schools in the semis. The Howard County team started the game with just six players due to injuries suffered in earlier games, and finished with just five. They put up an incredible fight, but P&P escaped, 11-8. By the championship game against BCC, the team was thoroughly exhausted, while the Barons were still pretty fresh, having brought nearly 30 players to the tournament and receiving a bye in the quarterfinal round due to a midday change to the tournament format. Poets & Pitchers put up little resistance in an 11-5 loss, but claimed a historic second-place finish in its first-ever trip to states. It is a great accomplishment for a team only one year into its existence.
